The 10th Croydon Scout Group - "Over 100 Years Young"

22nd November 2020

If you have read the history of the Group you will realise we have been around for over 100 years, but we have constantly moved with the times, and I wouldn't want you to get the impression we are living in the past. If you missed it and wish to see our heritage there are a couple of links below.

  • History of the 10th Croydon
  • Informal History of Scouting in General
  • In fact the Group has always been so focused on looking forward towards the future that we honestly did not realise exactly how old we were until we built this web site, that may be hard to believe, but it's the truth. I guess that's what happens when you constantly work with young people. Even when our venerable age was pointed out to our Group Scout Leader (GSL), she replied, "Wow, I suppose we must be".

The 10th Croydon is a totally "open" Group in all senses of the word, we are multi cultural, multi ethnic, multi racial and have a good mix of different religions. We sincerely believe that mankind's strength comes from celebrating our differences, and hope that we have achieved "synergy" where the whole is considerably more than the sum of the parts.

Everyone involved here works together as a team with one objective in mind, and that is playing our small part in helping our young people grow to be better, more well rounded individuals, better able to deal with all the trials and tribulations that life will inevitable put in their path as they continue their journey and their adventure. At the same time we try our best to ensure the learning process is FUN! Scouting is not like going to school, we do not teach young people anything, but they learn everything, there is a big difference. Young people learn things through Scouting that are difficult to learn in any other way.

    A word from our
    GSL & DGSL

Just a note to say that during this year Scouting has seen probably one of the worst years ever in our history certainly the worst year excluding the war years.

Many groups have closed and many have struggled. However I'm really proud of our team because in spite of all the problems this year has been one of our best years for a considerable time.

We have embraced a new leadership team, a new style of leadership, we have recruited new members and new supporters, in spite of a very difficult situation.

The improvements within the Group are amazing and It's virtually unheard of to successfully make so many sweeping improvements in such a short time period. I think it's safe to say that once again we have made history this year and all the signs are that moving forward things will get even better.

Looking forward we are planning something special to celebrate the Groups 115th birthday.

Congratulations to you all for the time and hard work you have put in, and as we move into 2021 I hope and believe we can keep it up, and continue to grow in strength and numbers.

Well done to everyone of you, and thank you for your support.

    From Karen & Kay.

    Laser Tag

We have a LARGE hall and access to wooded areas, so laser tag seemed like a fun team game to go with some other "Glow in the Dark" night games we already had. So the Group has been collecting our own Laser tag Equipment and we now have 20 sets.

    Orienteering in Lloyd Park

The Lloyd Park orienteering course has been serviced and missing points replaced, so we thought we would go night time orienteering.
